On the links, Cats hungry for title

The Varsity Girls? Golf team is set to gear up for another run at the regional title this season, after finishing 2nd in the Flint-Metro League last year with a 9-5 record in duel matches. A disappointing 10th place finish in the Regional tournament has the team hungry for another try in 2004.
Led by seniors Kate Hubbard, Jackie Maher and Emily Jacobson, the Lady Cats are ready to take their league, according to Coach Terry Kelly, who has a six-year tenure with the team as the varsity coach.
‘I believe that we will win our league this year,? said Kelly, ‘and that’s an expectation, not just a hope.?
Of his seniors, Kelly said he expects performance as well as leadership, setting a good example for new players such as sophomore Crista McCauley and freshman Claire Hubbard.
‘We have three seniors who have been through this before. They know what to do and they don’t get rattled,? he stated.
Already in the middle of their season, the girls have had two matches prior. The team beat Luthern North by a score of 194-241 on March 25 for their first duel victory of the season. The ladies also played Lake Orion, but came out on the losing end, 190-179.
However, Kelly did not view the loss negatively, asserting that, ‘Orion is one of the best teams in Oakland County, so we were very pleased (with the effort).?
Next, the team will play in the Oakland County Invitational on April 20.
