Students in Barbara Johnston’s fourth grade class at Oxford Elementary spent last Wednesday afternoon packing personalized gift boxes for a unit of U.S. Marines in Fallujah, Iraq they ‘adopted.?
Students drew flags, bright colors and Christmas decorations on the outside of the four by four boxes and neatly placed candy, Trident gum, a letter and four AA batteries inside.
Johnston said the class was ‘inspired? to send batteries because of a girl named Lizzy Lulu, from California, who had a goal of sending 1 million batteries to the troops to power their cell phones, cameras, games, electric shavers, etc., to help them cope with the war.
Unfortunately, she died early this year at the age of 13 from Cystic Fibrosis, but people all over the United States have taken on her mission. As of Dec. 1, a total of 696,328 batteries have been collected.
OES fourth-grader Addy Poniewierski said she wrote a letter about herself to hopefully take a soldier’s mind off of the war.
Students in Johnston’s two fourth grade classes packed a total of 60 boxes, which comes to 240 batteries.
Way to go, kids!
