Goodrich – New teachers greeted pupils at Goodrich elementary schools this week.
At Oaktree Elementary, new third grade teachers include former Oaktree Young 5’s substitute teacher Jamie Hamel, and former Reid second-grade teacher Amanda Gentry. Mindy Hart is the new Oaktree special education teacher.
In an effort to reduce early elementary class sizes at Reid Elementary, Christy Flowers, a long-term Oaktree substitute teacher, is teaching a new class of first-graders. Thanks to the new section, each first grade teacher will have approximately 22 students instead of 26.
Equating smaller class sizes with better learning opportunities, the Goodrich Board of Education informally approved the new teaching position at its Aug. 16 meeting, despite budget constraints.
The decision didn’t give the new first grade teacher much time to set up her classroom before school started.
‘It was worth it,? says Flowers. ‘I’m just so thrilled to be here.?
Administrators are still seeking outstanding candidates for a middle school special education teacher, said Goodrich Superintendent Kim Hart.
