New school board trustee appointed

Goodrich- On Monday night the school board voted 4-2 to appoint Dan Keller trustee, replacing Vice-President Jeff Gardner who resigned June 23 due to extended work obligations.
Trustees Greg Main, Chip Schultz, Nikki Wiederman and David Cramer voted yes. Trustees Tim Zirnhelt and Linda Jackson voted no.
In addition, Jackson will be the vice-president replacing Gardner following a board vote.
Dan Keller is currently a lieutenant with the White Lake Township Police Department where he has served since 1998. During that time, Keller has been a patrol officer, school liaison officer and sergeant.
‘I have spent time as a high school liaison officer working alongside students, teachers and administrators to create and implement programs that involve important issues such as bullying and school safety,? wrote Keller in a letter to board members.
Keller serves as a union president for White Lake Township police and earned a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from Grand Valley State University and is currently working on a master’s program for public administration from the University of Virginia.
He is married and a Goodrich resident with children in the school district.
Keller marks the second law enforcement professional currently on the school board. Treasurer Chip Schultz is a deputy fire investigator for the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to Keller one other candidate Kurt Schulte, also expressed interest in the seat.
Keller will be on the board until Dec. 31, 2014’the end of Gardner’s term.
‘We had two excellent candidates for the seat,? said David Cramer, school board president. ‘Either one would make a great board member we had to choose one.?
The school board has four seats open in the regular Nov. 4, 2014 election. In addition to Jeff Gardner, trustees Niki Wiederman, Chip Schultz and Greg Main, also have open seats. The petition deadline is 4 p.m., July 22 with the Genesee County Clerk. All seats are six year terms. However, Main was appointed due to the resignation of Trustee Ryan Starski in January.
The remainder of his term will end in 2018.
