As a part of the No Child Left Behind federal legislature, the Oxford School District has instituted a new Parent Involvement Policy this school year.
The Parent Involvement Policy was designed the beginning of this year to encourage parent involvement with their students.
The Oxford School Board decided Tuesday night to adopt this policy and highlighted the different features.
Jim Schwarz, Director of Curriculum for Oxford, said at the meeting that the new policy would be effective to all students, regardless of their academic level.
‘They really signify what we believe as a school district in terms of our roles and responsibility relative to establishing that partnership,? he said.
According to legislature, each student’s parent or legal guardian is to receive a copy of the policy in their respective student handbook.
The policy lists the proposed frequency of various student assessment results that are to be communicated to parents.
MEAP and ACT scores are always sent to parents, classroom performance reviews are put on quarterly report cards and parent teacher conferences are to be held in November and March.
It also encourages parents to participate more in their child’s school functions, maintain an active interest in their child’s daily school work and to make sure to read all communications sent home from the school.
Oxford High School principal Michael Schweig said research shows the more the parent is involved, the better the student is academically.
‘I think it’s another effort to reemphasize the importance of working with parents and their student’s best interest in terms of academic achievement and accomplishments while they’re in school,? he said.
