Mom Squad helps with motherhood

For those struggling with the challenges of motherhood; relief is on the way.
The Mom Squad, a group of women at the Clarkston Free Methodist Church, have two upcoming events planned in the area.
A spaghetti dinner is scheduled for April 5 from 5 ?6:45 p.m. with the proceeds to benefit the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Donations are accepted at the door.
There is also a Mom2Mom Sale on April 22 from 9 a.m.? 1p.m. and approximately 15 tables remain for renters to sell goods useful to mothers. Both events are at the Clarkston Free Methodist Church.
‘It’s basically like a big garage sale,? said Mom Squad member Rachel Lake of Independence Township who explained many toys and some household goods will be for sale at the Mom2Mom sale during a phone interview.
The group also plans to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
The walking team consists of the same four women who helped organize the Mom Squad at CFMC: Rachel Lake, Alysia Medema, Pam Radlicki and Danette Meny.
The Mom Squad formed in 2004 when Lake saw a need for such an organization.
‘Those of us on the organizational team felt the need for socialization with other moms who are at home with their kids and to build relationships with these moms. We also wanted to have a place for women in the community to feel welcome in the church no matter their religious background,? said Lake in an e-mail interview.
‘We find a sense of belonging and receive support and encouragement from each other through the trying times of motherhood and celebrate together during the triumphant times,? added Lake.
Meeting at CFMC every week on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 ? 11:15 a.m. during the school year, the group holds Bible-study programs, fun activities and speakers. The events are designed to share knowledge about topics that affect women. Childcare is offered for children not in school. There is no charge to attend the group.
Those interested in selling at the Mom2Mom sale should call Alysia at 248-623-0207. Renting tables costs $20. The Clarkston Free Methodist Church is located at 5482 Winell Street off of Maybee Road.
