With the recent global focus on becoming what is called ‘green,? or environmentally friendly, two Oxford High School students have decided to tackle the local newspaper.
For their DECA marketing research project, seniors Danny Cummings and Adam Walker will be researching how The Oxford Leader can improve business through ‘green? marketing techniques.
‘We’re also looking at how to make a better relationship between the business and its customers,? Walker said.
According to the 17-year-olds, newspapers, like the Leader, have many ways to print their papers while staying environmentally conscious.
‘They have machines that can recycle unused ink, recycling paper in different ways, using different kinds of ink that are more environmentally safe,? Cummings said.
From what they’ve gathered for their research so far, the teens have learned that the Leader recycles ‘about a ton of newspaper? each week and that small rolls of unused newsprint can be purchased by residents instead of being thrown out.
To help them understand how residents feel about a more ‘green? newspaper, Cummings and Walker created a survey (see sidebar) for the general population to fill out and return.
After all of their information is collected, the students will write a 30-page paper on their findings and then head to the DECA state competition early next year where they will present their findings.
‘Hopefully, this project will bring about a more environmentally friendly attitude,? Walker said. ‘Hopefully, we can just make a difference.?
