On Monday, the Oxford varsity girls soccer team was looking to earn another win in league play against FML newcomer Swartz Creek, but ended the game in a 1-1 tie.
The Wildcats came out flat in the first half, according to coach John Thaler, and couldn’t keep possession as they usually do.
Swartz Creek had a breakaway 12 minutes into the half and were eventually given a penalty kick, making the score 1-0.
The second half saw the Wildcats in a more upbeat mood and tested the Dragons? goal keeper every chance they got.
Late in the second half, senior captain Sam Bono had a great pass to sophomore Taylor Dewey, who in turn curled a perfect shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net to tie the score.
Senior midfielder Jacki Pastewski also had an outstanding game and kept control of the midfield very well.
Last week, the Booters lost to Birmingham Seaholm 2-1 in a non-league game.
Oxford struggled to find their rhythm early in the game and ended the half down 1-0.
Midway through the second half, Bono had a perfect shot that was deflected by the goal keeper, but Dewey was able to set the ball back into the net to even the score.
With 10 minutes left, Seaholm was able to secure their win.
At Lapeer East last Wednesday, the Wildcats took on the #3 ranked team in the Division II, but were unable to reign supreme. The game ended with Oxford losing 2-1.
Sophomore Brianna Pastewski was the lone scorer of the game, while sophomore defender Brittany Moncrieff anchored the defense and played a good game.
‘The girls played a solid game against a very disciplined team,? Thaler said. ‘We played well and with some minor improvements, they’ll continue to play some great soccer.?
Oxford’s record is now 4-4-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the FML. They travel to Linden tonight.
