Brandon Twp-On July 1, Tom Miller took over as the new Brandon school district superintendent.
Miller, 49, had served 26 years in the Port Huron school district, including seven years as assistant superintendent. Following a 6-1 vote he was hired in March after a six month search by the school distinct.
‘My first few weeks will be to unpack my boxes and meet the staff and non-certified staff,? said Miller. ‘It’s going to take some time to understand the needs of the community’and get out and see what we have.?
Miller, who agreed to a $126,000, three year contract which included a moving allowance of $2,500 if he relocates to the district by July 1, 2006, said he’s still trying to sell his home in the Port Huron area and is eager to relocate.
‘The current system at Brandon is not broken, to assume the district is (broken) would be a mistake on my part,? said Miller. ‘When the board made budget cuts several years ago the tough decisions were made. Bart has left the district in good shape.?
Miller replaces Bart Jenniches who came to the school district in 1996 following the retirement of Brandon Superintendent Richard Wilson. Prior to the Brandon District, Jenniches served as assistant superintendent for instructional services in the Saginaw Intermediate School District. He was also Superintendent of Schools for Birch Run Area Schools, Superintendent at Camden-Frontier Schools, Sparta Area Schools middle school principal and elementary school principal at Tri-County Area Schools after beginning his career as a sixth grade teacher at Ypsilanti Public Schools.
In 1973 Jenniches received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, four years later he earned a Master of Arts Degree from Eastern Michigan University. He also worked on post graduate study continuing degree program from Michigan State University.
During his tenure as superintendent Jenniches says he’s most proud of the enhancement of the course offerings, establishing pride in the school district and facility upgrades throughout the district.
