Goodrich-Amid the slurry of celebrities in the area for last weeks Super Bowl, Oaktree Elementry, played host to such musical guests as Kid Rock, Eminem and Madonna.
Well? maybe not those actual superstars, but some local fourth graders did great impersonations of those and other musicians with Michigan connections.
Teacher Wayne Wilson decided to incorporate local musical talent into the students history lessons.
‘We’ve been doing it for a couple years,? said Wilson, who did the presentations in conjuction with fellow fourth grade teacher, Nicole McVey.
‘The fourth grade cirriculum was Michigan history. (Having the kids learn about Michigan bands) kind of livens things up,? Wilson said.
Presentations had to meet certian specifications, including a research page and some titles of the musicans’more noteable songs.
More than15 students participated in the event, dressing up as icons such as Aretha Franklin , Bob Seger and members of KISS.
Also represented were Grand Funk Railroad, Three Men and a Tenor, and The White Stripes.
Wilson himself got in on the act, dressing up as White Stripes vocalist’and Detroit native? Jack White.
Madison Gerry, 9, came dressed as Kid Rock. ‘He grew up in Michigan and lived here his whole life,? Madison said.
James Eickhoff, 9, showed up in the guise of Glen Miller from the group 3 Men and a Tenor. James learned a lot while researching his project including, ‘he has lived in Berkly his whole life ? and he’s only 5 feet tall.?
KISS was represented by 9 year old Jeremy Skinner, who came in full face paint and drawn on chest hair. Mackenzie Fraim, 10, was just happy to have some fun homework. ‘I got to learn about Eminem.,? Mackenzie said.
Students were given the option of dressing up and all were required to give a presentation about an artist with local ties to the class. The presentation was to take the form of a record cover, which resulted in Wilson having to explain to the class what a record was.
Some of the kids, he said, thought they were big CD’s.
