Goodrich’s powerlifting team more than held their own at the state championship meet Mar. 18 at Goodrich High School.
The Martians took sixth place out of 45 boys? varsity teams at the meet, while the girls? team finished fourth overall. In addition, several Martians at the varsity and junior varsity levels placed in the top 10 in their respective weight classes to earn them all-state status.
Plainwell won the boys? competition with 72 points, while Flint Powers was runner-up with 63. Rounding out the top five were: Clarkston (50), Colon (41) and Flushing (28).
Two Goodrich junior varsity powerlifters made state history in their respective weight classes.
Jake Winston, 14, competing in the 194-lb. weight class, broke the dead lift record with a 555-lb. lift, 50 lbs. more than the previous record. Winston’s three-lift total of 1320 lbs earned him a first-place finish in his weight class.
Meanwhile, Matt Fauth, 15, competing in the 132-lb. class, set a new squat record of 350 lbs. He finished third in his weight class.
In the girls? division, Christina Sweet and Jo Carter were the top placers for the Martians, each finishing second in their respective weight classes.
Two other Martians, Sarah Sweet and Mary Haiderer, earned fourth-place finishes, while Erin Voltz notched a sixth-place finish. Also placing for the Martians were Cassie Shepherd and Meredith Mayberry (each finishing in seventh place) and Heather Cardneau (ninth place).
Three Goodrich varsity boys? lifters placed in the top 10 in their respective categories: Alan Easton (fifth), Scott Edwards (seventh) and Nic Compeau (eighth).
In addition to Winston and Fauth, several Goodrich junior varsity competitors placed in the meet.
Zack Dubay added a fifth-place finish for the Martians, while Dan Bradburn and Dan Gustinis each finished seventh in their respective classes. Other Goodrich JV lifters placing in the meet were Blake Hudak (ninth) and Reece Kurdyla (10th).
