Goodrich’s wrestling team competed hard in the Chesaning Tournament Jan. 8, and came away with a split in their four matchups.
The Martians defeated Carrollton 56-18 and Pinconning 64-15, but lost to host Chesaning 43-27 and Central Montcalm 32-26.
Against Carrollton, the Martians dropped their first matchup at 160 lbs., and both teams forfeited the 171-lb. contest.
From there, though, it was all Goodrich, as the Martians won six matches in a row. Erik Fernelius (189), Kyle Fletcher (215), Andy Crawley (275), Mark Webber (103), Garrett Higdon (112), and Jason Fischer (119) all earned wins for Goodrich before the Martians forfeited at 125 lbs.
The host Indians proved to be too much for the Martians to handle in their matchup. Goodrich lost their first two matchups before Fletcher won his match at 189 lbs., defeating Mike Casassa by a 7-2 decision.
Chesaning won the next three contests to go up 21-3, but the Martians rallied to score three pinfalls and tie the match at 21, with Webber (103), Higdon (112), and Fischer (119) earning the wins.
However, the Indians took control of the match from there, with Grant Overcashier (135) the only other Martian wrestler to earn a victory.
Facing a school whose hometown is famous for cheese, the Martians exposed several holes in the Pinconning wrestling team on their way to defeating the Spartans.
Goodrich earned eight of their 11 wins by forfeit, with Fernelius (171) and Overcashier (135) earning pinfall victories and Crawley (215) winning by decision.
Despite their best efforts, the Martians could not overtake Central Montcalm in their fourth matchup of the day.
Fernelius (171), Fletcher (189), Webber (103), Higdon (112), Fischer (119), and Billy Feldmann (140) earned wins for Goodrich in their matchup against Central Montcalm.
The Martians hit a speed bump Jan. 5 in a quad meet at Capac High School.
The Martians lost both their matchups that day, dropping a tight matchup against Capac 38-32, and then losing a blowout against Yale, 54-15.
