Goodrich’s varsity girls cross country team has clinched its eighth straight Genesee Area Conference championship.
The Martians earned that honor by finishing first in the GAC championship meet Tuesday, Oct. 17, finishing with a team score of 21 points. Goodrich outdistanced second-place Durand for both the meet and league championships.
Seniors Kelsey Meyers and Kelsey Krych led the pack for the Martians. Meyers finished first in 19:59, while Krych was not far behind in second at 20:22.
‘They’ve been very out front leaders, not only position-wise but with the underclassmen,? Goodrich coach Jennifer Sweet said of Meyers and Krych. ‘They’ve taken control of the team. They’re very looked up to and respected.?
The Goodrich girls dominated the top ten standings, as the Martians also placed runners fifth through ninth. Sunney Mahalak (21:21), Jennifer Brothers (21:29), Kayla Jung (21:45), Chelsea Balanger (21:50), and Katie Dymond (21:51) comprised the Martian quintet.
Meanwhile, the Goodrich boys finished fourth at the meet with 132 points. Durand won the meet and league championships.
Derek Warner was the lone Martian to place in the top twenty, placing 17th at 19:55. Sweet said Kirk Britton and Alex Worden also had solid showings, placing 23rd and 24th, respectively.
