Goodrich’s boys basketball team is meeting a couple of old acquaintances in district competition.
The Martians won their district opener March 9 against LakeVille, 66-33, a week after the Martians had defeated the Falcons in regular season action.
Next up for the Martians was Montrose in the district semifinals March 11. The Martians had defeated the Rams in their regular season finale March 5.
‘That’s just the luck of the draw,? Goodrich coach Gary Barns said. ‘That’s what March Madness is all about.?
The winner of the Goodrich-Montrose game will take on the winner of the other district semifinal matchup between Flint Powers and Flint Southwestern Academy.
The Martians? win against the Falcons was a team effort, as a dozen players got in the scorebook. Michael Skinner led the Martians with 16 points, converting three 3-point shots.
As a team, Goodrich connected on nine 3-pointers against LakeVille. However, Barns does not expect that trend to continue.
‘We played real well, but we still have a lot to learn,? Barns said. ‘We know we can’t live by the long shot. We still have to go inside.?
Mike Roney led the Falcons with 19 points.
Four days earlier, the Martians ended their regular season on a high note with a 65-47 win against Montrose March 5.
The game was the last home contest in the careers of the Martians? two seniors, Max Bell and Adam McAuliffe.
Goodrich started off slowly, as the Rams took a 17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, the Martians received a lift off the bench from Charlie Richards, who scored all seven of his points in the second quarter. The Martians pulled ahead to take a 30-29 halftime lead.
In the third, Skinner scored six points and Bell five as the Martians increased their lead to seven, 45-38. Goodrich pulled away from the Rams in the fourth with a 20-point outburst.
Skinner scored 17 points to lead the Martians, while Kenny Cramb chipped in with 10 points, and Kirk Elsworth had 10 points and eight rebounds. Bell led the Martians in rebounding with nine.
Adam Barber led Montrose with 10 points.
