The Goodrich varsity girls basketball team has been on the winning end of plenty of blowouts this season.
The Martians? Nov. 9 game against visiting Montrose was no exception, as the Martians cruised to a 76-21 win in a game that saw a continuous clock in the second half.
With the win, the Martians improve to 16-3 overall and 13-2 in the Genesee Area Conference Red Division heading into their regular season finale Nov. 11 against Lake Fenton.
Michelle Elliott led a contingent of five Martians in double figures, scoring 14 points, while Kortni Elsworth and Maribeth Barns added 13 points apiece. Nykole Pfaff scored 12 points and Amy Ramiller 10 for the Martians.
Goodrich coach Jason Gray said that ‘sometimes it’s hard? for the Martians to stay focused when they’re involved in a blowout, but also said he uses practice as a way to keep the girls mentally sharp.
‘We look at our practices as our best competition for some weeks, and we play in practice accordingly,? he said. ‘We do what we can with it.?
The Martians open district action at home Monday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. when they take on Fowlerville. That game will be followed by Williamston against Linden at 8 p.m.
On Wednesday, Nov. 17, the winner of the Goodrich-Fowlerville game will take on Corunna, and the winner of the Williamston-Linden game will take on Durand. The district championship game will be held Friday, Nov. 19.
Gray said it will be a challenge for the Martians to play against unfamiliar competition.
‘It will be interesting playing against teams we don’t traditionally play, and it will also be interesting to see if we can adjust to a different level of competition.?
