In a hard-fought nonleague game, Grand Blanc had enough left in the tank to outlast Goodrich.
Before a raucous crowd in Goodrich, Grand Blanc, a member of the Big Nine Conference, defeated the Martians 48-43. With the loss, the Martians dropped to 12-3 overall. Goodrich remains on top of the Genesee Area Conference Red Division standings with a 9-2 record in the league.
The Martians pulled away toward the end of the first quarter for a 13-11 lead, but Grand Blanc pressured the Martians into several turnovers on their way to taking a 26-21 lead at the half.
Freshman Kortni Elsworth led the Martians with 13 points. Pam Wilson scored 17 points to lead Grand Blanc (11-5).
In a battle of two of the best teams in the Genesee Area Conference, it was the visiting Hamady Hawks who came out on top against Goodrich Oct. 20.
Hamady won the matchup 54-48, their first win against the Martians in 19 years.
Hawks center Laura Baker proved to be a tough foe for Goodrich to overcome, scoring 22 points (including 8-of-9 from the free throw line) and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Elsworth scored 14 points to lead the Martians, while senior Maribeth Barns added nine points.
