Three Lake Orion High School athletes signed letters of intent on Feb. 1.
Football players Scott Avery and Joe Nowicki and golfer Dave Kurtz will continue their athletic endeavors in college.
‘This is a big day,? said assistant principal and head football coach Chris Bell. ‘We’re proud of all of our athletes.?
‘They now represent two programs,? added principal Todd Dunckley, ‘and we’re proud of the gentlemen they’ve become.?
Avery and Nowicki will remain teammates as both are headed to Northern Michigan University.
‘I’m going to have someone there that I’m already comfortable with,? said Avery, who is hoping to make an immediate contribution at NMU.
Nowicki is also hoping to make an impact as a true freshmen.
‘I’d like to break every record they’ve got,? he said, noting that he is grateful to get a chance to play for four more years.
‘We’ve had a great tradition of guys going on to play college football,? said Bell.
Over 20 LOHS football players have played in college in the last eight years.
Kurtz, an all-state golfer and two year captain, will be playing at Oakland Community College next year.
‘It means a lot to me,? he said. ‘I really want to make it to the PGA tour and this is that next big step.?
Golf coach Monty Gallaher said Kurtz’s dedication made him stand out.
‘When you think of a captain, you think of somebody vocal, but he led by example.?
