Goodrich- Flags may soon be flying in the village once again.
By June 14, Flag Day, local scout Hunter Hansz hopes to not only have new flagpoles up in front of the village offices, but hopefully spark some patriotism in the community.
‘That’s one of the goals of the Great Lakes Council for us scouts,? said Hansz, 13. ‘I was attending a Goodrich Village Council meeting to earn my Boy Scout Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge when I noticed that the flagpole was just a stub sticking up from the ground. I understand it was damaged in a storm and never repaired. So that’s where I came up with the idea to make some changes.?
Hansz, an eighth-grade student at Kingsbury Country Day School in Oxford, is seeking to become an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in scouting. The project he selected will be to expand the area in front of the village offices to include three flagpoles, lights and a bench in addition to brick pavers. The project, with an estimated cost of $16,820.32, still needs approval of the Great Lakes Council which should come later this month, added Hansz.
The Eagle Scout project was approved by the village council at the Dec.12 meeting. The project includes extensive service hours that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages.
The project will be funded by selling a selection of brick pavers ranging in price from $500 (16? by 11?) for four lines to $250 (11? by 11?) to $100 (8? by 5.5?) for two lines.
The American flag, the State of Michigan flag and the flag of Goodrich will be dedicated on July 4.
Hunter is the son of Gary Hansz and Melissa Hansz and has been a scout with Troop 128 from Lake Orion for about five years.
