The first-ever Flint Metro League title is within the grasp of the Varsity Softball team after they swept both Lapeer East and Swartz Creek this week.
Oxford dispatched Lapeer East quickly on Friday, May 14. They defeated the Eagles 15-0 in three innings in the first game and 15-0 in four innings in the second game.
In the first game, senior Chelsea Kessler went 4-4 with an RBI, while freshman Autumn Cervantez went 3-3 with four RBIs.
Senior Kelly Cartner hit an inside-the-park home run. Senior Corrine Luxton dominated on the mound, pitching all three innings, striking out five and giving up no hits.
In the second game, sophomore Hannah Rogers got her second victory of the year, giving up one hit while striking out three. The offense gave her all the support she needed, getting 15 runs on 11 hits.
The Wildcats traveled to Swartz Creek on Monday, May 16 and took the doubleheader, winning 10-1 in game one and 7-6 in game two.
Luxton threw a complete game in game one, striking out 10 while only giving up four hits. Sophomore Amanda Boyer went 2-4 with four RBI’s and sophomore Cassie Edgemon was 2-4 with two RBIs.
Sophomore Alyssa Hurtado came up big in game two when she clubbed two home runs in Oxford’s 7-6 victory.
Her first home run came in the first inning and gave Oxford a 3-2 lead. She came up again in the fifth inning with Oxford trailing 4-3 and she connected again with a two-run homer and gave Oxford a 5-4 lead.
Oxford would take a 7-4 lead in the top of the seventh, but Swartz Creek got a two-run home run to pull within one before the Wildcat defense shut down the Dragons.
The victories improve the Wildcats to 15-10 overall, and 12-2 in the FML. They play at home against Linden on Thursday, May 20 starting at 4 p.m. and travel to Lake Orion on Friday, May 21 and Holly on Monday, May 24.
