The Lake Orion Police Department’s 8th annual Shop with a Hero program will take place on Dec. 14, and there is still time for people to support kids in need.
The Shop with a Hero program raises money for children in Lake Orion to shop with Lake Orion Police Department officers. The officers accompany the children while they pick out gifts that they may not otherwise have this holiday season.
“The really cool thing is the bridge building that happens between the child and the hero. They get to go shopping and spend that time together,” said Chief Jerry Narsh. “The family is blessed, but also the hero feels blessed too. It builds important communication bridges.”
Knude Products, organizers of this year’s Shop with a Hero program, has been raising funds by making Christmas tree ornaments, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Shop with a Hero.
Knude Products presented Narsh with an $875 check at the Orion Tree Lighting on Nov. 26.
Knude Products also raised an additional $300 in funds for Shop with a Hero after writing the check.
According to Chief Narsh, there are currently around 60 children participating in the program and the department is hoping to provide each child with $150 to spend.
There is also a “Giving Table” which allows children to choose free gifts they can give to their siblings, so no one feels left out this holiday season.
This year’s event will be held on Dec. 14 from 6-9 p.m. at the Auburn Hills Target.
Donations to Shop with a Hero can be made by stopping by the police department or mailing checks directly to the police department.
Make checks payable to the Lake Orion Police Association and mail to 21 E. Church St. Lake Orion, MI 48362.
