After losing a ‘heartbreaker? game 58-56 against Troy last Monday, the Oxford Varsity girls basketball team bounced back with two straight wins.
On Tuesday, the Ladycats defeated Linden 40-29. ‘Our girls did a great job tonight of sharing the ball against the Linden 2-3 zone defense, and our defensive pressure took them out of their offense,? said Coach Al Poynter. ‘I like our chances going forward into districts if we can continue to play that way.?
Junior Captain Joelle Harms led the team with 17 points followed by Le’Essa Collier with 8 points.
On Friday night, the girls came out on top against Lapeer East 50-37.
Senior captain Kelsey Oliver and Harms each had 11 points, and junior captain Brooke Bocquet had 10 points and eight assists.
‘Our girls came out with great energy in the second half and finished the game strong at both ends,? Poynter said. ‘We have to continue to look to make plays rather than waiting for someone else. If we do that, then we will have a successful finish to the season.?
At Troy, the overtime loss left something to be desired, although Harms shined with her 20 points and sophomore Allie Laidlaw’s 14 points. ‘We played an excellent game for three quarters, but our defense abandoned us in the fourth quarter and overtime,? Poynter said.
The girls are now 13-6 overall and 12-3 in the Flint Metro League. Oxford plays their final regular season game on Friday against Brandon at home at 6 p.m.
