Poor second-half shooting against Rochester Stoney Creek on Monday, Feb. 7 cost the Lady Wildcats hoop squad a chance at their third OAA victory.
Oxford could only muster 8 points in the second half and fell 41-28, dropping their record to 2-6 in OAA white play and 2-11 overall.
‘We just couldn’t buy a basket in the second half, even though we held them to 16 points,? varsity head coach Al Poynter said.
Junior Michelle Gilmore led the Wildcats with eight points, seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Shelby Davis contributed eight points for Oxford.
The Wildcats kept the game close throughout the entire first half, trailing 12-8 after the first quarter and 25-20 at halftime. Poynter gave credit to the girls defense for keeping them in the game.
‘I am very proud of the defensive effort of our girls,? he said. ‘Holding a high scoring team like Stoney Creek to only 41 points is an excellent accomplishment and is a good sign for the rest of the season.?
He added progress is being made and he can see things in games that showcase it. One area he highlighted was turnovers, which decreased for the third straight game.
