The Goodrich varsity softball team had a lengthy list of achievements this season.
Headlining that list were three Martians who were announced to the Division 2 All-State softball team. Senior shortstop Julie Owen and sophomore outfielder Kelsey Krych were named first team All-State, while senior pitcher Jessica Morgan was named honorable mention All-State.
This is the second time Owen has been named first team All-State ? last year, she earned that honor while playing second base. Krych and Morgan were both honorable mention All-State selections last year.
Goodrich coach Rick Bescoe said Owen’s transition from second base to shortstop this season was not a difficult one. ‘It was pretty natural for her,? he said.
Owen batted .448 this season and led the Martians with three home runs and 38 RBI, and also stole 28 bases. Krych set Michigan High School Athletic Association records with 76 hits and 76 stolen bases, batting .571 to lead the Martians.
Morgan pitched 28 games this season, starting 26. She went 26-2 on the mound with a 0.89 earned run average and 165 strikeouts. She also batted .397 for the Martians this season.
The three players were also named to the All-District and All-Regional teams. In addition, Morgan and Owen were named Academic All-State players, awarded to seniors who carry at least a 3.5 grade point average.
The Martians were also well-represented on the All-Genesee Area Conference Red Division team.
Five Martians ? Morgan, Owen, Krych, Alisha Bergeron, and Alyssa Bertrand ? were named to the first team all-league squad. Tara Garman was named second team all-league, while Ashley Short and Kortni Elsworth earned honorable mention recognition.
The Martians also awarded several postseason honors to team members. Morgan was voted the team’s Most Dedicated Player, while Krych was named the Most Inspirational Player and Owen received the team’s Heart and Soul Award. The Krych family was also named Most Supportive Family.
Goodrich set MHSAA team records for season hits (437), runs batted in (245), and batting average (.410).
