Stray dogs and cats in Oakland County will now go to bed with a full stomach and have healthy medical records thanks to two Oxford residents.
Like most kids, Brittany Loder, 12, and her brother, Jacob, 9, decided to set up a lemonade stand at their grandparent’s house in Macomb Twp. over the summer.
But instead of saving their daily profits for toys or cool clothes, the siblings decided to donate the money, totaling $200, to the Michigan Humane Society in Rochester Hills and the Oxford K-9 Stray Rescue League.
It didn’t stop there, though.
For Brittany’s birthday last month, she asked her guests to bring pet food, treats, animal beds and other items instead of gifts. She purchased more food with the money she received.
So far, Brittany has collected over $400. The money will be used for surgeries, vaccinations and check-ups for the stray animals.
‘I think it’s wonderful,? said Brittany’s mom, Deborah. ‘Every dime she makes she puts in her money jar. When it comes to animals, she’s got the biggest heart.?
Having so much compassion for animals isn’t alien for Brittany. At one time, her family had 12 pets. Of course, she wants to go to school to become a veterinarian.
When she turns 13, she plans to volunteer at Banbury Cross Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Oxford. ‘It’s really fun to help other people,? she said.
Both Brittany and Jacob compete in the Michigan Sport Karate Circuit and plan to sell cookies and brownies at a tournament next month to raise even more money for the shelters. Good job, kids!
