On Aug. 23-24, Good Times in Goodrich arrives for another annual weekend of fun for the whole family.
Hundreds are expected to gather downtown on Saturday and Sunday to watch the parade which kicks off the festivities, jam to a band or two and visit with some of the townsfolk during the late summer event which also features all-day craft show, marketplace vendors and a walking tour of the cemetery.
Many of the popular events, including pancake breakfast, duck races, and blues music in the streets, will bring visitors back for another year of fun in downtown, said Bryan Haley, Good Times committee member.
‘The pie eating contest is back by popular demand and the Tyler Bonner Memorial Car Show on Erie Street has grown each year to include some awesome rides,? he said. ‘We’ll also have a family movie in the park, ‘Frozen,? so bring your lawn chairs and blankets.
Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen titled ‘The Snow Queen,? the Disney film tells the story of a fearless princess who sets off on a journey with a rugged iceman, his pet reindeer, and a snowman to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.
‘We are also hosting a community-wide church service in the Commons area for another year,? said Haley. ‘The Point Church will be leading the services. Then stop by for some Sunday lunch with Good Eats in Goodrich, featuring lunch items from Cranberries Cafe, Mexico at the Market, Redwood Steakhouse and Brewery, Atlas Valley Country Club and Porter’s Orchard to name a few. The lunch is a great chance to enjoy some of the local eateries with your friends and neighbors in Goodrich.?
The kids area sponsored by Valley Tent Rental opens at noon on Sunday and at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon the community is invited to dress in princess or superhero attire and come down to Goodrich Commons Park for a parade.
The local band Rock of Ages Big Band will return for another year and perform from 1-2:30 p.m. in the common area. Rick Horton, local resident and Goodrich Village Council president, plays the trumpet in the Rock of Ages Big Band.
‘After more than nine years of performing together we have a pretty large song selection from the ?40s, and ?50s,? he said. ‘Recently the group started adding newer big band songs from Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington. Vocals include tunes by Frank Sinatra along with other selections of music. The group is comprised of all volunteer musicians from Davison, Lapeer and Grand Blanc and provides plenty of fun for the whole family.?
‘It’s great to play in my hometown. Always a pretty good crowd in Goodrich and it’s nice to see my neighbors out there.?
