The varsity Wildcat hockey team wasted little time getting back on track from Christmas vacation with a 4-2 victory over Royal Oak on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
Sophomore Stephen Fritz led the Wildcats in scoring with three assists, while senior Tim Perks contributed two goals.
Junior Dean Couwlier and senior Nick Hocker got Oxford out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. Both Couwlier’s and Hocker’s goals were assisted by Fritz.
Perks scored his first goal of the game with six minutes left in the second period.
He took a feed from senior Tim Dutzy and buried it behind Royal Oak’s goalie.
Royal Oak was able to get on the board early in the third period to cut Oxford’s lead to 3-1, but Perks responded less than two minutes later, giving the Wildcats a 4-1 lead.
Sophomore Oscar Alexandersson stopped 36 of 38 shots for the win.
‘I was proud of our boys (for fighting) through the aggressive style of Royal Oak and (coming) away with a victory,? head coach Dave Hague said.
With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 7-3 on the season and 5-0 in the Oakland Activities Association.
They will do battle with Gaylord on Friday, Jan. 7 before taking on Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, Jan. 8.
