Results for the latest set of Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) testing for the high school students last October in the Oxford district were announced at the board of education meeting Oct. 10.
Jim Schwarz, Executive Director for Curriculum of Oxford Schools, presented the numbers and said most of the test numbers were ‘comparable? to 2004-05 numbers.
Eleventh graders were tested in math, reading, science, social studies, writing and English language arts and the results are as follows:
n Math ? 7 percent exceeded Michigan standards and 41 percent met Michigan standards.
n Reading ? 1 percent exceeding Michigan standards and 58 percent met Michigan standards.
n Science ? 5 percent exceeded Michigan standards and 53 percent met Michigan standards.
n Social Studies ? 45 percent exceeded Michigan standards and 37 percent met Michigan standards.
n Writing ? 5 percent exceeded Michigan standards and 51 percent met Michigan standards.
n English language arts ? Zero percent exceeded Michigan standards and 55 percent met Michigan standards.
Schwarz said it was good to see that 45 percent of Oxford High School eleventh graders exceeded the state’s standards in the social studies test, seeing as how zero percent did in 2004-05.
There was also a two percent drop in the percentage of students who exceeded state standards in English language arts compared to last school year.
Schwarz said with the state mandating that all schools to be 100 percent proficient by 2014, it makes preparing students for more rigorous testing harder.
‘We continue to do well, but it’s getting harder to maintain doing well,? he said.
