Led by forward Max Hawkins, the Goodrich hockey team went on an offensive tear against Oxford Jan. 14.
Hawkins scored four goals and added two assists as the Martians earned an 8-3 win against host Oxford at the Polar Palace in Lapeer, improving to 5-3-2 on the season.
Mitch Milke and Brennen Benedict added two goals each for Goodrich.
The Martians got out of the box quickly against the Wildcats, scoring four first-period goals (two by Hawkins, one each by Benedict and Milke) before the Wildcats got on the board with 1:48 left in the first on a goal by Alex Hoffman, cutting the Martians? lead to 4-1 at the end of the first period.
Hawkins then earned a hat trick with 10:44 left in the second on an assist from Reece Geml to put the Martians back up 5-1. However, the Wildcats scored two goals within a minute, one each by Hoffman and Steve Smith, to trim the Goodrich lead to 5-3 with 4:50 left in the second period.
The momentum switched back Goodrich’s way when Oxford’s Brian Simpson was called for a holding penalty with 1:34 left in the second. Milke then capitalized for the Martians with a power-play goal with 36 seconds left in the second, putting Goodrich up 6-3 at the end of the second.
Hawkins and Benedict then iced the win for the Martians with third-period goals.
Goodrich also lit up the scoreboard against Clio in a Jan. 11 game, scoring five goals in the third period on their way to earning a 6-2 victory against the Mustangs.
Hawkins scored two goals for the Martians, while Steven Tangney assisted on four of the Goodrich goals.
Both teams scored a goal in the first period, with Clio’s Justin Meiser scoring a shorthanded goal to put the Mustangs up 1-0. Hawkins scored the first of his two goals in the game on assists from Zack Pernack and Tangney to tie the game at one.
After a scoreless second period, Milke got the ball rolling for the Martians in the third period on a power play goal, assisted by Geml and Tangney, to give Goodrich a 2-1 lead.
That goal was followed up by a goal from Tom Ferreri and Hawkins? second goal, putting Goodrich up 4-1. Benedict and Geml rounded out the Goodrich scoring with one goal apiece, while Trevor Carpenter scored the other Clio goal of the game.
Goodrich’s Brad Smith stopped 18-of-20 shots (90 percent) in net.
