Hats off for Hawkins, Martians

Powered by Max Hawkins? hat trick, the Goodrich hockey squad continued their winning ways against host Oxford Jan. 24.
Lance Keene and Nick Meyers also scored as the Martians defeated the Wildcats 5-3 at the Polar Palace in Lapeer. The win improved the Martians? record to 11-3-2.
Brian Van Kuren and Matt Hill assisted on three goals apiece for the Martians.
The host Martians took the sting out of the Avondale Yellow Jackets, winning a 4-2 contest at the Ice Mountain Sports Complex Jan. 21.
Toward the end of the first period, Goodrich’s Keene put the Martians ahead 1-0, scoring with 1:38 left in the period on assists from Ryan Mortimer and Danny Daugherty.
The Martians increased their lead to 2-0 with 13:53 left in the second, as Meyers camped in front of the net and slapped the puck past the Avondale goalie. Keene and Scott Hollingsworth assisted on the goal. However, just 33 seconds later, Avondale’s Jerry Blakey scored the first of his two goals to cut the Goodrich lead to 2-1.
The two teams traded goals again in the second period, as Keene scored his second goal of the game on assists from Daugherty and Steve Locke with 8:07 left the period. Avondale’s Blakey responded with his second goal of the game 45 seconds later to cut the Goodrich lead to 3-2.
In the third, Goodrich’s Mortimer scored an insurance goal with a little more than a minute remaining, with assists from Keene and Meyers.
The Martians return to action at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4 when they take on Romeo at the Polar Palace in Lapeer.
