He may have taken 19 years, but Don Peters is back coaching softball at Clarkston High School.
Having been a JV coach in 1985 at CHS, Don Peters left to take over the Brandon softball program in 1986. He now returns to Clarkston with a career record of 532-197, a class B state championship from 1994 and a new team to mold into a perrenial winner.
‘When the job in Clarkston came open, I thought it would be a great challenge for me to take on,? said Peters.
The Wolves softball team last year went 25-15, losing 5-4 in the state semifinals to Portage Northern. Peters was at that game and at the time had no idea he would be coaching Clarkston. Peters resigned from Brandon on Nov. 17, 2004.
The team which Peters takes over has lost a majority of the players who carried the Wolves to such lofty heights last year. Peters expectations this year are to improve every game.
Having taught in Clarkston for the past 22 years at the Oakland Technical Center Northwest Campus, the job opening at CHS was a perfect fit for Peters.
‘I always wanted to coach that’s why I became a teacher,? said Peters.
Peters was inducted into the Michigan Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000.
He lives with his wife Gayle and has two grown daughters: Krista Peters and LeeAnn Mazich. Mazich will serve as an assistant coach on Peters? staff this season.
