Gray, Olsen lead team to second in OAA

The Lady Wolves are getting ready to hit the green at Twin Lakes Golf Club for the MHSAA regionals this Thursday.
“They will be a little nervous,” admitted Clarkston Girls Varsity Golf Coach Steve Hoffman. “I might be more excited than they are.”
A few tough teams he pointed out in the tournament are Utica Eisenhower, Davison and Grand Blanc.
“Even the teams in our league are tough,” he added.
For the team to place they will have to score 330 or better and Hoffman said they can do it. The Lady Wolves are close to taking off strokes off their par.
“They have what it takes,” he added. “They have the mental, they have the tools, they have the technique and they all have the focus. Hope we have good weather and good conditions.”
He added Clarkston will be looked at as the underdog going in because they aren’t known as a golf school.
“There are sixteen schools in our golf region. I would say five state championships in that group. The ladies program in the high schools have come a long way. They are playing well. They are taking the game more seriously than they have before. It is fun to watch young ladies shoot in the low 70s.”
The Lady Wolves took second place at the OAA Red golf tournament with a score of 360 at Birmingham Country Club, Oct. 1.
“It was fun watching the girls play the most difficult of courses,” said Hoffman. “Birmingham Country Club is a majestic course with fast greens, thick rough, and beautiful fairways. They played it before and each girl chipped five strokes off their score, if not more.”
Anna Gray and Paige Olsen finished as medalists. Gray finished in fifth with a par of 85 and shared the spot with two other golfers. Olsen finished in eighth with a par of 86 and tied with Rochester for the spot.
“Anna was playing so well she gave me the sign of ‘I’m okay, coach,'” said Hoffman. “My rule is if they are playing well I will stay away during a match or a tournament. I saw she was in the zone. Paige and the other girls were in the zone. The top six golfers were punting well.”
Seaholm took first place with 337. Stoney Creek finished in third with 365; Troy, fourth; Rochester Adams, fifth; Rochester, sixth; and Lake Orion, seventh.
“We weren’t suppose to beat anybody but Lake Orion,” Hoffman added. “It was clearly evident when our scores came in our girls played hard and played well.
The regional meet is at, 455 Twin Lakes Drive, Oakland Township, 9 a.m.
“They are mentally and physically ready,” said Hoffman. “They have worked hard.”
