A rare feat of dominance was accomplished by the Oxford varsity wrestling team in their match against Troy Athens on Wednesday, Jan. 5.
In a preformance comparable to the perfect game in baseball, the Wildcats achieved a perfect wrestling score of 84, pinning every member of the Athens squad that stepped onto the mat.
‘It’s pretty special to hear about an 84-0 victory,? varsity coach Brad Keeney said.
‘We got 14 kids going out against 14 different kids and everyone wrestling a perfect match…it’s pretty impressive,? he added.
According to assistant coach Paul McDevitt, this was the third time since 2007 the Wildcats have posted a perfect score.
One came in 2007 against Saginaw, while the other came in 2008 against Bad Axe.
McDevitt noted that the two previous times, Oxford received points when opponents voided a match. He said that this was the team’s first true perfect match with 14 pins.
The dominance continued with a 62-9 victory over Farmington Harrison later in the evening.
‘We’ve had a really tough schedule up until now and the kids got a chance to have some of the pressure taken off of them and wrestle in more of a fun environment,? Keeney said.
‘Ever since they came off the Oxford Invite and beat Lake Fenton and Hudson, they kind of have a little bit of a different attitude right now, and they are really having a lot of fun,? he added.
The week wrapped with the Wildcats finishing third at Novi Detroit Catholic Central Invite.
The Wildcats claimed two individual championships, senior Matt Frisch at 145 lbs. and senior Ben Ralston at 160 lbs.
Oxford will head back to Novi DCC this week to take on Catholic Central in a head to head match-up Jan. 12.
