The Varsity Wrestling team closed out it’s last Flint Metro season by claiming the league title in record fashion on Saturday, Feb. 6.
They amounted 274.5 points, eclipsing the record they set last season.
Five Wildcat wrestlers claimed league titles when the event was over, and five more were runner-ups. Keegan Cantara (103 lbs.), Jake Pratt (130 lbs.), AJ Logan (160 lbs.) and Prescott Line (215 lbs.) all claimed league titles in their final season in FML competition.
Jacob Peasley (112 lbs.), Steve Ferguson (119 lbs.), Mike Thomas (125 lbs.), Zac Miller (135 lbs.) and Nick Hadorn (HWT) finished second for Oxford.
Overall, 13 of the 14 wrestlers placed in the top four at the league tournament.
‘This was a big time of the season…that was kind of our going away present to the FML with us going away to the OAA,? Head Coach Scott Couch.
This league title was the fourth straight for the Wildcats.
‘FML is always a tough league and the competition is always strong. I think that us finishing the way we did in the tournament shows that we are ready for districts on Wednesday,? said Couch.
The Wildcats closed out the FML regular season by defeating Fenton and Holly on Feb. 3. The Wildcats defeated Holly 40-22 and Fenton 55-9.
‘Holly is always a great rivalry with us and we knew we had to come out and wrestle tough,? said Couch. ‘Fenton has some good guys and they always wrestle tough, but we had too much depth for them,? he added.
The Wildcats are busy prepping for districts, which will be held at the High School on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m.
