Kirk Elsworth’s gridiron exploits continue to earn him plenty of recognition.
The Goodrich senior running back was featured in Sports Illustrated’s ‘Faces in the Crowd? section in their Nov. 22 issue. That section is devoted to prep athletes throughout the country who have achieved excellence in high school sports.
Goodrich varsity football coach Tom Alward nominated Elsworth for the award.
‘It’s a great honor to be nominated, but to be in it (the magazine) is even better,? he said.
Elsworth was also selected to The Detroit News? 2004 high school football ‘Dream Team,? which appeared in the Nov. 28 edition of that newspaper. He was one of only 24 high school football players throughout the state selected for the team.
‘That’s also another great honor,? Elsworth said. ‘I don’t think anyone else (from Goodrich) has ever made it there.?
A three-year starter for the Martians, Elsworth set state single season records for touchdowns (52) and points (391), and finished 23 yards shy of the state single season rushing record (set by Clinton Township Chippewa Valley’s Chris Lohansy in 2000) with 2,867 yards on 254 carries. He had 48 rushing touchdowns this season.
In his career, Elsworth tallied 5,819 rushing yards and 94 touchdowns.
