Goodrich-Though the faces and names have changed over the last century, the Goodrich Women’s Club remains.
‘As the times change, we change,? said Goodrich resident Marcia Rockafellow, the club’s president.
‘The club started with 13 ladies from the Baptist Church Sunday school class in 1906,? said Rockafellow. ‘Through the years, the activities have changed with the times.?
Rockafellow, 69, said the club was likely one of the only social outings women in the area had. As years progressed, the focus of the club changed slightly to reflect the social climate in Goodrich. During WWII, ladies in the club banded together to help the men in the service in various ways. Other groups would perform skits or host dinners.
The changing role of women in the workplace has affected membership in the club, said Rockafellow, explaining that because the group meets in the afternoons, it might be difficult for working women to participate.
For Rockafellow, the club offers both a sense of history and camaraderie.
‘My husband’s grandmother was a member of the club, and his aunt invited me to join,? said Rockafellow. The women in the club have a sense of community with one another as well, since most have lived in the area for a long while, seeing each other through school functions and work environments.
At monthly meetings, members of the Goodrich Women’s Club discuss the club’s history, work on crafts and do various charitable activities.
‘I just enjoy being with the group,? said Rockafellow, ‘whether it’s relatives, friends or neighbors.?
Rockafellow said anyone interested in the club should attend the May meeting for ‘guest day?.
To celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary, members will celebrate with an afternoon tea on Oct. 13 at Piccadilly Place in Fenton.
‘It’s been a sustaining club for 100 years,? said Rockafellow. ‘I think that’s an admirable accomplishment.?
The continuation of the club has never been a question in the minds of its members, said Rockafellow. ? It’s just an assumed thing’we want to perpetuate (the club). Everyone has that dedication.?
