Goodrich to put healthy snacks within students’ reach

Goodrich – Students hungry for a snack at Goodrich High School will soon have yogurt, fruit, and freshly made sandwiches at their fingertips.
The Goodrich Board of Education approved funds for a vending machine to distribute healthy snack foods at last Monday’s meeting.
The $7,500 vending machine recommended by Jean Kish, director of food services in the Goodrich School District,. isn’t the least expensive model, but it accomodates a better variety of food products, she said.
The model rotates products for direct access; in cheaper models food items drop down.
The machine would be placed near the main high school gym, and be filled daily by school kitchen staff, said Kish, who has been investigating healthy food options over the past few months.
The current vendor will have a chance to provide information regarding possible similar models, said Dr. Raymond Green, Goodrich superintendent.
Although the food service budget has dwindled from past years, a portion of the food product cost would be paid back to the school from the recommended vending company, said Green. The board will eye a milk machine at a later date.
