Goodrich softball splits twin bill against Lake Fenton

Goodrich’s softball team rebounded from its first loss in Genesee Area Conference competition to split a twin bill against host Lake Fenton May 8.
Lake Fenton scored three runs in the seventh inning of the opener to hand Goodrich its first GAC loss, 5-4. The Martians bounced back to win the nightcap, 14-2, improving their mark to 11-5 overall and 10-1 in league play.
The two teams traded runs in the opener, with each team scoring a run in the first inning, Goodrich scoring one in the third and Lake Fenton answering with one in the fourth.
The Martians took command of the game with two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead, but Lake Fenton staged its rally in the seventh. Although Goodrich pitcher Emily Doerr struck out two in the seventh, Lake Fenton scored its three runs on the basis of two hits, a fielder’s choice in which Goodrich failed to retire the Lake Fenton batter, and a fielding error.
Doerr pitched 6-2/3 innings, striking out seven while allowing five runs (two earned) and four hits.
Julie Owen went two-for-four for Goodrich, while Christina Saindon went two-for-three with two steals. Sarah Barns went one-for-three with a stolen base and an RBI, while Kristan Childress went one-for-three with two RBI.
Goodrich wasted little time seeking to avenge its opening-game loss, scoring six runs in the first inning to take command early. The game would eventually be shortened to five innings.
Jessica Morgan picked up the win on the mound for Goodrich, allowing only two runs (none earned) and one hit while walking two and striking out four. She also went three-for-three at the plate with a triple, a stolen base and four RBI.
Alisha Bergeron also went three-for-three for Goodrich, with two triples and an RBI. Owen, Saindon and Barns each went two-for-three.
The team returns to action today when they host Byron at 4 p.m.
