Goodrich – After years in the idea stage, the Goodrich Pathway project came to life when asphalt was installed this week.
The non-motorized pathway borders Hegel Road west of the Goodrich Country Club to Oaktree Elementary in Atlas Township.
The idea, spearheaded by Goodrich officials, was tossed around for ‘years and years? but failed for lack of funding. It was revived five years ago by Village of Goodrich Adminstrator Jakki Sidge, who requested consideration for Surface Transportation Program rural funds.
‘The idea never really went away,? said Sidge in a 2004 interview. ‘It was part of our recreation master plan.?
Work has been on schedule, and the pathway is still expected to be completed by Aug. 5.
A mid-point dropoff near the golf course will be built up with a retaining wall to bring the section level with the remaining pathway, the most time-consuming portion of the project, said Sidge. After the middle portion is paved, restoration work will be completed, bringing surrounding turf even with asphalt.
Although portions of the 10-foot wide pathway are paved, they’re not ready for the public.
Residents shouldn’t use the path until adjacent grassy areas are restored to the same level, says Sidge. Because the pavement is several inches above bordering areas, Sidge is especially concerned for those maneuvering bicycles and wheeled devices.
‘There are safety issues,? she said. ‘We’d hate for somebody to get hurt.?
Of $717,000 estimated for the project, Goodrich is paying approximately $80,070 in matching funds, with Atlas Township paying an estimated $30,000.
Upon completion, area residents will have access to the pathway and village sidewalks along the west edge of M-15, previously completed during a Goodrich beautification project.
