Goodrich soccer mom Lisa Bertand had it right.
‘All tonight is about, is who wants it more,? she said.
And on a cold, Wednesday night in Williamston, the Martians delivered.
With a 3-0 shutout, the second-ranked Martians (20-3-2) stopped the defending state champion and third ranked Detroit Country Day Yellowjackets (21-6-1), setting up a Division 3 State Final showdown with Whitehall (22-1-1) at noon today at Rochester Stoney Creek.
The Martians had dropped two games this season to the soccer powerhouse Country Day, but won when it counted.
With 4:34 left in the first half, Martian senior David Garr made the first goal of the night. ‘Making the first goal was the best feeling I have ever had in my whole life,? said Garr.
Ending the first half 1-0, the Martians came out strong in the second half. Junior Chase Bertrand headed the ball in for a goal with 22:26 left, assisted by senior Brandon DeGrouchy.
‘Words can’t even describe how I felt when I scored,? said Bertrand. ‘This was the biggest game we have ever played.?
Chad Frownfelter was on top of his game, blocking every attempted goal. With 10 minutes left, the score was 2-0 Goodrich. DeGrouchy scored an additional goal at 7:20 and the game ended, 3-0 Martians.
‘This is a dream come true,? DeGrouchy said. ‘I have been waiting for this opportunity for four years, and it truly shows that hard work pays off.?
