Led by Tara Garman’s all-around play, the Goodrich varsity volleyball team is still in the hunt for the Genesee Area Conference Red Division title.
The host Martians defeated Mt. Morris 25-13, 12-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-7 in a Jan. 31 contest. With the win, the Martians improved to 12-14-1 overall and 5-2 in the GAC Red, good for a second-place tie behind Byron, which is 6-0 in the league as of press time.
Garman contributed 30 kills, 10 blocks, and 28 digs, and was 12-of-12 serving, 46-of-49 attacking and 8-of-9 passing. Alyssa Bertrand dished out 63 assists and was 135-of-137 setting and 22-of-22 attacking, along with 12 digs and four aces.
Julie Owen had eight aces and was 26-of-27 passing and 41-of-46 attacking with 20 digs and 11 kills, while Ellen Nothhelfer was 20-for-22 passing with 12 digs and Katie Birch 31-for-35 attacking.
Four days earlier, the Martians scored another key GAC Red victory, defeating Montrose 25-15, 25-13, 3-35.
Garman led the charge with three aces and digs, 25 kills, and nine blocks, and was 34-for-35 passing. Owen chipped in with 12 aces and served 20 straight points in the third game of the contest, going 25-for-28 overall in that category.
Bertrand had three aces, four kills, and 44 assists. Birch was 18-of-19 attacking, while Sarah Sweet led the Martians in kills with 31.
