Goodrich kickers claim first GAC championship

Someone had to win the first Genesee Area Conference soccer championship in the conference’s history.
Goodrich coach Josh Watson and the Martians are happy to claim that honor.
The Martians clinched the league title with a 1-0 win against Montrose in an Oct. 17 game. Stephen Harlow scored the lone goal of the game with about five minutes left in the game, while Andy Krause stopped six shots in goal for Goodrich.
Goodrich is currently 7-0-3 in league play and 8-4-3 overall.
‘It’s a great accomplishment for the kids,? Watson said. ‘You can’t ask for a better record, except to win all our games, but we haven’t lost any of our league games.?
The game was in sharp contrast to the Martians? Oct. 13 game against the Rams, which the Martians dominated 9-0. Harlow scored two goals for the Martians, while Bobby Short and Duane Engleman added one goal each.
‘Montrose really played well yesterday,? Watson said. ‘They were a totally different team.?
The Martians had two games remaining in the season. They were scheduled to travel to Saginaw Nouvel Wednesday, Oct. 19 and then to take on Davison Friday, Oct. 21 at home.
‘We need to get into better shape and do a little more conditioning to get ready for districts,? Watson said. ‘We need to start playing more consistently.?
