Goodrich icers start off season with two straight victories

Goodrich’s varsity hockey team showed a combination of offensive firepower and solid defensive play in its first two games.
The Martians improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory against Freeland Dec. 3 at Ice Mountain Sports Arena in Burton.
Tom Ferreri scored two goals for the Martians and added one assist, while Steven Tangney added three assists and Derek Powers two.
Brennen Benedict got the Martians on the board first with a first-period goal, assisted by Powers and Zack Pernack. Max Hawkins increased the Goodrich lead to 2-0 later in the period, on an assist from Ferreri.
Goodrich increased their lead to 3-0 in the second period on Ferreri’s first goal of the game, with Reece Geml assisting. Freeland scored later in the second to trim the Goodrich lead to 3-1, but Ferreri answered with his second goal of the game to put Goodrich up 4-1 as the second period came to a close.
Mitch Milke and Mitchell Syrowik added goals for the Martians in the third period. Goodrich outshot Freeland 38-16 in the contest.
Goodrich goalie Brad Smith stopped 15-of-16 shots (93.8 percent) in the game.
The Martians got their season off to a quick start in their Nov. 30 opener against Bloomfield United. Only five seconds into the game, the Martians? Ferreri scored the first of his two goals, sending the Martians on their way to a 5-1 victory at the Ice Mountain Sports Complex in Burton.
Ferreri’s goal came on an assist from Geml, who also scored with 11:32 remaining in the first period on assists from Ferreri and Hawkins to put the Martians up 2-0, which was the score at the end of the first period.
The Martians quickly added to their lead in the second period on a power play goal from Ferreri, his second of the game, just 20 seconds into the period. Tangney and Geml assisted on the goal, which put the Martians up 3-0.
Pernack added another goal for Goodrich with nine minutes left in the second on assists from Powers and Benedict to increase the Martians? lead to 4-0.
Bloomfield United scored their lone goal of the game with 3:23 left in the second, but Goodrich added an insurance goal with 8:25 left in the third period, as Benedict scored on assists from Pernack and Travis Wandell.
Smith stopped 28-of-29 shots (96.6 percent) in goal for Goodrich.
