Goodrich grapplers excel against Heritage, Vassar

Goodrich’s varsity wrestling team found mid-Michigan to be to their liking Dec. 16.
The Martians took both their matchups at Saginaw Heritage, defeating the host Hawks 49-33 and Vassar 49-24.
Against Heritage, the Martians got started on the right foot, winning the first three matches. Mark Webber (103) pinned Kevin Hayes in 43 seconds; Garrett Higdon (112) pinned Nick Higdon in 3:19; and Jason Fischer (119) pinned Ryan North in 30 seconds.
After a double void and a Heritage win, Grant Overcashier (135) picked up another win for Goodrich, pinning Andy Pits in 48 seconds.
Three other Goodrich wrestlers earned wins in the matchup: Billy Feldman (145) pinned Ben Modlin in 4:29; Erik Fernelius (171) pinned Justin Mack in 2:30; and Kyle Fletcher (189) pinned Mike Martinez in 1:00.
As in the matchup with Heritage, Weber, Higdon and Fischer led the Martians to the early lead. Weber (103) pinned Mike Endeet in 1:20; Higdon (112) pinned Don Sebeet in 1:06; and Fischer (119) defeated Bob Palmer by an 11-1 decision.
After Vassar won at 125 lbs., Overcashier (130) defeated Rich Safford by a 22-7 decision. Heritage won at 135 lbs., but Goodrich rebounded to win the next three matches: Brad Armstrong (140) pinned Brett Lamay in 3:23; Feldman (145) pinned Josh Lamay in 53 seconds; and Joe Leppek (152) pinned Winston Adlans in 5:00.
Fernelius and Fletcher capped off the Martians? scoring. Fernelius (189) won by default, while Fletcher (215) earned a 16-0 decision against Markus Huizar.
