Goodrich girls track sets two school records at state meet

Goodrich’s girls track team earned a couple of places at the Division III state track meet May 31 ? and broke two school records in the process.
The 3,200 meter relay team of Samantha Minkler, Jill Zirnhelt, Kristen Poulos and Janee? Jones took home a sixth place finish, setting a new school record. Jones set another school record on an individual basis, placing fifth in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:20.8, breaking the old school mark set by Becky Duda in 1988.
The Martians? boys team was not as fortunate as their female counterparts, as they did not score in the league meet. According to Coach John Shaw, Geoff Misek, who had qualified for the state meet, strained his ligaments in the Genesee Area Conference Red Division league meet May 21, meaning he was unable to compete in the state meet.
Both teams can feel proud of themselves for putting together a solid season, Shaw said. ‘We had a good year and we hope to have an even better one next year,? he said.
The Martians figure to return fairly intact next season. Misek and Chris Adamec are the two key seniors from the boys? team who will be graduating this year, according to Shaw, while Poulos, Betsy Schumacher, Rebecca Scott and Christy Wilson will be graduating from the girls? team.
In addition, Shaw said two eighth-graders currently at Goodrich Middle School, twin sisters Kayla and Kaitlyn O’Meara, will make a significant impact on next year’s squad.
