Despite the windy weather conditions, the Goodrich girls soccer team had a field day against visiting Hemlock April 26.
Six different Martians scored goals in their 9-1 rout of the Huskies. The win improved Goodrich’s season mark to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in Genesee Area Conference play.
Amanda Bishop, Meredith Mayberry and Amber Beard tallied two goals apiece for the Martians, while Meg Holt, Natalie Cook, and Hayley Smith each scored a goal.
Goodrich coach Nigel Barnett said the team has a good foundation for this year and the future.
‘We’re knee-deep in juniors and sophomores,? he said. ‘We have a few seniors, but they’re not the backbone of the team. We have a lot of speed.?
Barnett also said Smith is playing ‘outstanding? soccer for the Martians so far this year, and Jillian Zirnhelt, once she returns from an injury, will give the Martians even more team speed.
The Martians also earned an impressive 3-0 win against visiting North Branch in an April 22 matchup. Beard scored two goals for the Martians, while Natalie Cook tallied another goal.
Barnett said he expects the Martians to continue to be in the hunt for the league title, with Saginaw Nouvel and Lake Fenton providing the stiffest competition.
