Goodrich’s varsity boys basketball team has not found the going any easier in the Genesee Area Conference Red Division this past week.
The visiting Martians fell 60-48 to Bentley in a league game Tuesday, Jan. 17. Goodrich is now 3-7 overall and 3-5 in league play.
After a slow start to the game, which saw the Bulldogs take an 8-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, Bentley seized control of the game by outscoring the Martians 19-8 in the second to take a 27-12 lead at halftime.
Although the Martians tried furiously to come back in the second half, scoring 36 points in the half, ultimately it was not enough to overtake the Bulldogs.
Zac Glynn tried his utmost to keep the Martians in the game, scoring 15 points in the second half, including 13 in the fourth quarter. Glynn led all scorers with 21 points (including 6-of-8 from the free throw line) and added five rebounds, while Ty Purdy led the Martians with six boards.
Kevin Richardson led the Bulldogs with 19 points, including eight in the fateful second quarter and nine in the fourth quarter to seal the win for Bentley. Nick Bolen added 12 points for Bentley.
Bendle’s dynamic duo of Matt LaFreniere and Brent Combs proved to be too much for the Martians to handle in a Jan. 13 GAC Red matchup.
LaFreniere scored 21 points and Combs added 20 as the Tigers defeated the host Martians 62-50. Goodrich was playing without one of their top players, Jake Smigiel, who was out due to injury, Goodrich coach Gary Barns said.
Matt Christensen led the Martians with 13 points, including three three-point baskets, while Glynn added 12 points and Jake McGinnis 10. McGinnis and Purdy led the Martians in rebounding with 11 apiece.
