With the season’s first three matches behind them, Clarkston’s golf team can now take stock of where they stand. The team is 2-1 (2-0), and their Coach Larry Sherril likes the direction they are headed.
‘I was looking at scores this year compared to last year and they are similar. The difference is we are a lot younger this year,? said Sherril.
Last year the team finished 10th at the state finals. This year, in the April 12 Coaches Association poll, the Wolves are ranked 10th.
The past week had the Wolves going 1-1: losing to Brandon 197-199 on April 12 and notching another important league victory against Rochester Adams 203-207 on April 13.
Jackie Schram had the low score for Clarkston on both days. She shot a 40 on a windy and cold afternoon against Brandon and hit the clubhouse with a 43 against Adams.
Also helping the Wolves conquer the Highlanders were Lyndsey Kitson with a 49, Courtney Henderson with a 54 and Minjoo Lee with a 57.
‘I’m getting a better feel for each player’s swing and what their tendencies are,? said Sherril.
After the rash of activity early in the week, Sherril had the team work on specific skills on April 14 and 15. Sherril hopes the tight focus on some of the team’s early trouble spots, such as chipping and the short game, will show in the Oakland County Tournament.
The tournament, which finished too late for this edition of The Clarkston News, was played at the Pontiac Country Club and provided a good litmus test for where the Wolves measure up against the rest of Oakland County.
Next up for the Wolves is a match against Lahser at Forest Lake Country Club on April 20, followed by the league meet at Pine Trace on April 26.
