A third place finish in the regional tournament has garnered the Wolves varsity golf team their first berth in the state tournament in ten years.
Clarkston’s four man team shot a combined score of 323 which was only bested by league rivals Lake Orion, who shot 322, and Rochester Adams, who shot 319.
‘The Orchards is a demanding golf course,? said Clarkston Coach Tim Kaul. ‘I am happy for the team but I still don’t think that their best round has been on display this year.
Rob Ronk led the wolves with a 74, which was also the second best individual score in a field that featured 15 schools.
‘You have to have one kid who plays really well to have a chance,? said Kaul.
Mike Fogg shot an 80, Zach McDonald registered an 82 and Colin Madole finished out the scoring for Clarkston with an 87.
‘I am still waiting for the day when I have more than a couple kids play well at the same time,? said Kaul.
The state tournament will commence on Oct. 15, with the final rounds being played on Oct. 16 and is being held in Traverse City. Kaul feels his team may have gone as far as talent will take them but relishes the experience and exposure Clarkston golf is due.
‘It is always good for your program to get to compete at the highest level,? said Kaul.
The team would be thrilled with any finish that places them in the top 10, which would qualify them for the second day of competition. Regardless of state placement the season will go down as a success for the Wolves, who earlier this year were not expected to be in contention at this point.
Regionals were held at the Orchards Golf Club, in Washington.
