Officials from United Auto Workers Local 5960 said they are optimistic about the possibility of adding a third shift at the General Motors Orion Plant, but officials from the automaker have yet to make any production announcements regarding the plant.
A third shift, believed to add over 1,000 jobs, would center around production of a hybrid version of the Chevrolet Malibu.
The Malibu has been popular since it’s addition to the Orion plant.
‘We’re really pleased with how the Malibu and the G6 are doing at the Orion plant and in the marketplace,? said GM spokesman Tony Sapienza. ‘But we haven’t made any announcement regarding production at the plant.?
The vehicle is selling at a rate that more than doubles last year’s totals at this time, and G6 sales have also increased.
Officials are pleased with these numbers, but any negotiations appear to be ongoing.
‘Unfortunately, there’s not much of a story yet, but we’ll see how things develop,? Sapienza said.
