The first time he said this year’s girls cross country team could be better than last year’s state championship winning edition, Jamie LaBrosse was not completely convinced. Now, after shepherding his team through early season injuries and training, LaBrosse believes.
‘I really think this is a better team than last year,? said LaBrosse.
The Wolves used the Dexter Invitational on Sept. 1 as a competitive workout, and LaBrosse liked what he saw as the entire team was healthy and ran in the event.
So far during the team’s early season training, LaBrosse is impressed with returning senior runners Beth Hoekstra and Lisa Sickman’s evolution from last season. Freshmen Kristin Smith and Angela Haight have also made a strong push for two of the ten spots on Clarkston’s A team this year.
Clarkston will have a two-mile time trial on their home course on Sept. 10, which LaBrosse instructed his team to treat like any other competition.
Because the Midwest Meet of Champions was cancelled, Clarkston’s A team will make their true competitive debut at the East Lansing Invitational on Sept 17. While the A team competes in Lansing, the Wolves? B team will run in the Holly Invitational.
‘We are going to try to win both, which I think would be a first,? said LaBrosse.
